Does anyone know some good rep for a very average youth orchestra? Something with a good timpani part, and preferably no other percussion (I’m the only percussionist in the group.)
“For an very average youth orchestra”; and a timpani only in the percussion. A tall order.
Being not really familiar with contemporary music – minimalist, atonal, etc. – the only one that I know of off the top of my head, but one which requires an organ and a “much more than average” organist, is Francis Poulenc’s “Concerto for organ, strings and timpani in G-minor”.
IF, there’s no problem with providing an organ and organist, then it’s a potential selection. It’s scored for organ, strings and timpani(only). Here’s an article about the composer:

And a set of You Tube videos of it(set on automatic play, so that the 2nd and 3rd click on, successively):

The only stumbling block? The organist would outshine everyone else: including the timpanist.
