Aberdeen, Scotland, is home to an iconic venue that has been providing entertainment and access to the arts for generations of the city’s citizens.   The Aberdeen Music Hall has hosted concerts and shows since its conversion for the purpose in 1859.   The building itself sprung up in 1822 and served as the city’s Assembly Rooms for over thirty-five years before its transformation.   While the building has been renovated on a few occasions, it still maintains its historic feel and stands in start contrast to today’s modern arenas. The Aberdeen Music Hall regularly features orchestral concerts.   The Royal Scottish Orchestra, the BBC Scottish Symphony and the Scottish Chamber Orchestra all make frequent appearances within the venerable structure.   The Music Hall showcases the work of many other artists, as well.   It consistently hosts sold-out rock concerts and performances by many of the world’s best known pop stars.   If you are in Aberdeen, for more than a few days, you will undoubtedly have at least one opportunity to witness a show in the Music Hall. However, the historic concert hall is probably best known as the site of the annual Aberdeen International Youth Festival.   The festival brings over one thousand young performers to Aberdeen every year.   These talented young people hail from all corners of the world and converge on Aberdeen to demonstrate their remarkable talents and to work with accomplished professionals to develop their skills and stirring new material. The AIYF program usually attracts tens of thousands of people to Aberdeen and while it makes use of several venues in the area, the Aberdeen Music Hall is its clear “headquarters. ”  Many of the world’s most talented young performers have wowed full houses in the old concert hall.   The festival features song, dance, orchestral performances, jazz, opera and more, testifying to the range of talent of its participants and the breadth of artistic appreciation of the people of Aberdeen. In major cities around the world, community developers and leaders are in a mad rush to create new performance venues featuring ultra-modern design and all of the luxury accoutrements one can imagine.   In the last few decades, we have seen hundreds of new arenas come and go as architects and city leaders look for the “next big thing. ”  Some of these new buildings don’t even last a decade before their demolished and replaced with something ostensibly “bigger and better. ” Meanwhile, in Scotland, fans of great music and art consistently turn out to enjoy shows in a renovated assembly hall whose history reaches back to the first quarter of the nineteenth century.   In an entertainment world so closely identified with a push for the new, the Aberdeen Music Hall stands out as a highly successful exception to the general rule.
