The Young Artists String Quartet is composed of members who have a tenacious nature and a serious purpose. Asserting impeccable musicianship is their guiding principle. With an astute approach to programming, this eager young ensemble continually beguiles audiences with its youthful spirit and dedication to technical achievement...Candace Dautel has been a member of the YAS orchestra for seven years and a part of the YAS Quartet for four years. She also serves as pianist for the worship services at New Life Mission Church in La Jolla. Candace has studied both violin and viola with Mary Gerard, as well as piano with the late Margaret Mac Dougall. A recent homeschool graduate of Heritage Christian High School, she plans to pursue her Batchelor’s degree through an accelerated distance-learning program...Morgan Byers is currently studying with Mary Gerard. She has been playing the violin for eleven years and the viola for five years. She also participates in other activities beyond music such as pole-vaulting for Eastlake High School. She is planning to minor in music and major in science. Morgan has enjoyed music, which has influenced her life greatly...Mosa Tsay studies cello with Catherine Godden. She has been a member of YAS since she was nine years old and is principal cellist with the orchestra. Mosa has been featured soloist in several concerts, and was recently a Hotshots finalist. She plays an 1880 Mittenwald cello loaned to her by the Carlsen Foundation...Richard Zhang currently plays viola in the orchestra and studies with Mary Gerard. He began his instruction with her as a violinist at age twelve and has recently picked up the viola as a second instrument. Richard currently attends La Jolla High School and has been a member of YAS for two years. His college direction leans toward several Ivy League schools as well as the UC campuses, most likely majoring in Economics. He hopes to one day share his enthusiasm for music with his children by teaching them.

The Young Artists Quartet provides outreach and musical performance for various functions throughout San Diego. Since its founding, the quartet has performed in various venues throughout San Diego County. Members of the YAS Quartet range from fifteen to eighteen in years—a fact that often amazes their audiences.
