Arrive in Glasgow by bus or train and you can’t help but be immediately surrounded by Glasgow’s city centre shopping district. Opposite the Buchanan Bus Station is the Royal Concert Hall, which forms the north end of the Buchanan Galleries – one of Glasgow’s best loved shopping destinations. Situated in the heart of Glasgow’s shopping district, where Buchanan Street meets Sauchiehall Street, the Galleries boasts over 80 shops, including fashion, cosmetics, jewellery, food and drink retail outlets. The Buchanan Galleries are easily accessible by bus, train and underground and, with an award-winning 2000-capacity car park, by car too from the nearby M8 Motorway, which connects Glasgow to the heart of central Scotland. If you prefer to browse independent boutiques or international branded fashion outlet stores, then you could find everything you need on nearby Buchanan and Sauchiehall Street. Here, you’ll find branches of big names in fashion, sport, books and music, all within walking distance of a number of other shopping malls in Glasgow’s city centre. Off Buchanan Street you can also access the elegant Princes Square shopping centre, which houses exclusive boutiques, cafes and restaurants. Further towards the Clyde on Buchanan Street you can discover Scotland’s largest shopping centre, the St Enoch Centre. This shopping mecca is also Europe’s largest glass structure, making it something of a historical site of interest too. Here, you can indulge in a variety of high street and big name brand stores while its family friendly atmosphere means you can relax with the kids in play areas or grab a bite to eat in the St Enoch Centre’s huge food court, which serves food to suit all palates. Glasgow’s shopping district also boasts the historic Argyll Arcade. Built in 1827, this Parisian style Arcade is one of oldest covered shopping centres in Europe. Here you’ll find 32 jewellers and diamond merchants, catering to modern and antique tastes in diamond rings and watches, under one historic iron-framed hammerbeam roof. Elsewhere in Glasgow’s busy shopping district, you’ll find modern shopping in the nearby Merchant Square Indoor Shopping Centre, which offers bars, restaurants and arts and crafts retail outlets. No shopping trip to Glasgow would be complete, however, without a visit to the city’s Barras Market. A combination of covered and open market stalls abound with eclectic goods for sale at great prices, from antiques to DVDs. Well loved as one of Glasgow’s less salubrious shopping destinations, but all the more fun for its inimitable Glasgow banter, you could well pick up a bargain and while away a morning in this character-full historic shopping market. Glasgow is a Scottish hotspot for shopping and culture, leading many to enjoy a short break overnight in a Glasgow hotel as the best way to experience all that Glasgow has to offer.
